Alumni Association &amp\;New Center for Psychoanalysis\n&nbsp\;\nThe WILA
Alumni Association is excited to present our next online CE event. Althoug
h we are online\, we will continue hosting CE events on topics important t
o our community as well as clinical development.\n\nPatients who have neve
r fully confronted – and grieved – the pain of their early-on heartbre
ak will often cling tenaciously to their hope that perhaps someday the obj
ect of their desire will be forthcoming. But there are others who\, in the
aftermath of their early-on heartbreak\, will find themselves withdrawing
completely from the world of objects – their hearts shattered – only
then to find themselves overwhelmed by a terrifying sense of alienation an
d harrowing loneliness. Instead of relentless hope\, their experience is o
f relentless despair.\nIn this Presentation\, clinical vignettes will be o
ffered that demonstrate how the therapist\, ever attuned to the patient’
s intense ambivalence about remaining hidden vs. becoming found\, can help
the patient overcome her dread of surrender to resourceless dependence (K
han 1972) such that there can be moments of authentic meeting (Guntrip 196
 9) between patient and therapist that restore purpose\, direction\, and me
aning to an existence that might otherwise have remained desolate\, impove
 rished\, and desperately lonely.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\nThis 4 CE
/CME event is at the intermediate level.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/et_pb_text

 esents: \nPhilip Ringstrom\, PhD\, PsyD\n&nbsp\;\nThe WILA Alumni Associat
ion is excited to present our first virtual CE+WILA event of 2021. Althoug
h we are online\, we will continue hosting CE events on topics important t
o our community as well as clinical development.\n\n\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\nThis
program involves Dr. Philip Ringstrom's presentation of his original model
for doing relational psychoanalytic couples therapy. It involves a ground
ed framework for addressing the complex psychodynamics of couples in highl
y practical ways. The model is based on three broad themes: 1) the actuali
zation of self-experience in an intimate relationship\; 2) the capacity fo
r mutual recognition and 3) the relationship having a mind of its own. Bas
ed on his 2014 Goethe Award winning book\, A Relational Psychoanalytic App
roach to Couples Psychotherapy\, Dr. Ringstrom will offer a clinically use
ful road map of six nonlinear steps which wed his theory and practice.\nHi
s model begins with the therapist's close attunement to the "hopes and dre
ad's" that each partner brings to the relationship\, pointing out the coup
le's "vicious circle" interactions when each partner's developmental (tran
sference) longings trigger painful or unmanageable (repetitive transferenc
 e) states in the other. The problems of blame\, shame\, failure of mutual
recognition\, and difficulties in self-actualization are clearly laid out
. On the heels of close attunement to the couple's conscious longings and
grievances\, Ringstrom shifts to how the emergence and exploration of enac
tments illuminates couples unconscious core repetitions\, with the goal of
moving these core\, seemingly immutable conflicts (often between unconsci
ous multiple self- states) from being etched in stone to being something t
hat the therapy can begin to play with more improvisationally.\nThe overal
l presentation promises to be both engaging and stimulating. Dr. Ringstrom
will lecture from a three-page-handout- outline of his model of couple's
psychotherapy while involving extensive audience interaction.\n\n\n\n\n\n&
nbsp\;\nThis CE is at the intermediate level. Cancellations are subject to
a $50 processing fee. Refunds will be given if an individual who has paid
for the program notifies the WILA within 24 hours before the start of the

This intermediate to advanced course for mental health professionals beg

r than chance and that at present there are no consistently reliable empir
ically validated treatment techniques to prevent suicide. However\, Dr. He
dges will demonstrate that in the past three decades much has been learned
about the dynamics of suicide and many promising treatment approaches hav
e been advanced that are slowly yielding clinical as well as empirical res
ults.Dr. Hedges will present the groundbreaking work on suicidality of Fre
ud\, Jung\, Menninger and Shneidman as well as the more recent work of Lin
ehan\, Kernberg\, Joiner and the attachment theorists along with the featu

in a relational/developmental context and will consider their implications

he interpretive process is potentially the therapist's most powerful tool
for stimulating personal growth through emotional integration. But\, since
an interpretation is aimed to destabilize some aspect of the patient's ne
urotically organized internal world\, it can readily be experienced as a t
hreat and therefore warded off. Even when the patient accepts the interpre
tation\, initially feeling recognized and understood\, unconsciously\, he
may be quite threatened by the knowledge about himself that has long been
disavowed. Understandable\, the new view of himself may quickly vanish as
he is unknowingly desperate to re-stabilize himself by retreating to a fam
iliar\, safer\, albeit self-defeating position. This program focuses on le

patient's retreat and advancing the treatment.\n
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text

nPresented by Nancy McWilliams\, Ph.D.\, ABPP\n\nAppreciating the clinical
implications of personality differences has been a central concern for ps
ychotherapists since the early part of the twentieth century. Our patients
are unique individuals\, with specific\, personality-related strengths an
d weaknesses\, and although we may focus on a particular "disorder" that a
ny client describes to us\, we understand that problem in the context of t
he person's individuality. Dr. McWilliams discusses the history of the con
cepts of personality structure and disorder and their relevance to practic
e\, reviewing ten different psychological lenses through which personality
  has been viewed: temperament\, attachment\, observed clinical pattern\, d
 efensive structure\, affective organization\, implicit cognition\, drive t
 endencies\, self-definition versus self-in-relation orientation\, core rel
ational theme\, organizing developmental issue. She explores central tensi
ons between research and clinical paradigms\, between trait-based and them
e-based conceptions of personality\, and between the assumptions underlyin
g the DSM and those underlying the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual.\n\n
[/
